WHAT WAS THE POINT ?

The Global Game Jam 2016! This is a world wide event that gives you a theme, and 40 hours to create a working game. This is a very intense and tiring experience, but it's very rewarding and you learn a lot from it. So how does this happen? Well, we give a pitch to a group of people if we have one, and groups form around pitches. The idea is then reworked and refined to create a final version of the desired pitch. Then the group has 40 hours to complete a game.

WHAT I ENDED UP DOING...

During this week-end, I ended up working on the gameplay obviously, as there wasn't much else to do in such a short amount of time. I focused on player control, moves combo behavior, crowd behavior.

WHAT I LEARNED FROM IT !

A lot actually. It's a very short amount of time, and for that reason we learn a lot. For starters, you learn to organize yourself while under pressure. The deadline is close as soon as it starts, and you learn to focus on what matters and prioritize. You can test yourself and reach your limits, and get to know better how you perform under pressure, which is a good thing for your career. You also learn how to cut to the chase, which is something lots of programmers have a very difficult time to do often times. Not expanding on one useless features when 3 other core features need work done. It also helps further develop my knowledge of the Unity game engine as every game done with it imposes new challenges and requirements. This was a great week-end!
