WHAT IS LIFF

Liff is a contemplative 3D adventure game where you wake up as the God of nature and life (Liff). Your world has been infected by dark matter slowly corrupting the world. The world is an impressionist painting. Your goal is to find the dark matter cores and destroy them to free the world. To do that, you have 2 core features at your disposal. The first one is Erasing matter around you to forge your own path or remove obstacles. The second is Creating matter. You can extend existing matter to also extend its properties. Once you finish the game you can contemplate your own work, much like you would a painting.

WHAT I WORKED ON

I was in charge of the 3C part of the game. I did a lot of work on Cameras. Indeed, Third Person cameras in a 3D adventure world require a lot of work to have a good feel. Being a contemplative game, there were also camera driven features that took a lot of time and effort. On a side note, I also did:

  • The character movements

  • The use of the main mechanics through a 2D Canvas.

  • The point array generation for that to then be sent to the other parts of the game.

WHAT I LEARNED FROM IT

As with all student projects, time was of the essence. I had to be especially careful in how I allocated my time. Despite the full year to work on it, the only real time allocated to that project during school hours was 2 days every 2 weeks. The rest had to be done on our own.

I also learned to communicate efficiently to prevent miss understandings on wasted time working on obsolete tasks.

This taught me a lot about gameplay mechanics with Unreal Engine 4 and I feel ready to take on a whole new project as an Unreal Engine 4 Gameplay Programmer.
